Maria Taylor has been consistent with her two releases, 11:11 and Lynn Teeter Flower, since she flew solo from Azure Ray. Friday the 11th of July, she came by the Echoplex with Jonathan Rice and Nik Freitas in tow. Mr. Rice has been a busy boy as well since the release of Further North in 2007. I’ve seen him multiple times this year already, and it was an extra nice treat pairing up with Maria Taylor (who even played drums for him on this tour).

Jonathan played a great set with the usual songs such as “Middle of the Road” and “We’re All Stuck Out In The Desert”, yet included a handful of new ones. The last time I saw him guitarist Jonathan Wilson accompanied him on lead. He is one of the best/creative guitarists I’ve ever heard, yet this time Rice had a new line up. All the musicians he had still delivered in their own way and all the parts fit nicely.

The downside to the tour was everyone’s gear being stolen the night before this LA show in San Francisco. Thanks to, I’m guessing certain boyfriends and girlfriends, some new gear was bought for them for the show. Maria was playing a beautiful new Gibson, but as any musician knows, nothing can replace what you’ve been comfortable with for years. The attachment between a musician and his gear is a deep bond. I felt there was a little lack of confidence when Maria took the stage, but with a brand new guitar that can be expected. She also played a handful of new songs, most of which were on a new EP, titled Savanna Drive, one can buy here, or wherever anything can be bought online. Despite the “gear problems” it was still very enjoyable and I look forward to the next time she’s in town.
