On May 28th, everyone’s favorite purveyors of matrimony rock, Mates of State, played Hollywood’s Henry Fonda Theater. The happily wed duo of Kori Gardener and Jason Hammel were playing a few west coast shows in support of the recent release of their 5th album, Re-Arrange Us on Barsuk Records.
Openers Biirdie while good, were a little too slow to match the energy of Mates of State and the overall young age of the audience in attendance. It should be noted though that Biirdie includes one Kala Savage who is the sister to Fred (Wonder Years) and Ben (Boy Meets World) Savage.
Mixing up the set with new favorites like “Get Better” and “The Re-Arranger” from the new album with old favorites like “Fraud in the 80’s”, “Think Long” and more, Mates of State delivered an electric show that had the almost packed venue wanting for more by the end of their already hour plus set. And more they got when the duo came back out for 3 more songs following their encore. While the band is mostly just Jason on drums and Kori on keys, they were joined by a couple string players throughout a good part of their set. For nearly two hours the band delighted their fans and no one was disappointed and the cherry on tap was their choice of playing their cover of Nico’s cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days”.
