Blah Blah free shows Mondays at Spaceland, The Echo, and Silverlake Lounge. You all know this, old news, but the good news is most the bands that play these residencies are good. Mondays for the month of June at The Echo is housing a band called Rumspringa (picture above, and playing some other night at The Echo).

Upon walking into the Echoplex just last Monday night (the last two Mondays the residency shows were moved to the Echoplex because Beck decided to pick the first Monday in June to play a secret show at The Echo, then at the last minute decided to push the show back a week. For two Mondays now Rumspringa has played the Echoplex), I was greeted by a very nice sound from the stage. This sound was being created by a Tempe, AZ band called What Laura Says [Thinks and Feels]. I was immediately drawn to their very refreshing sound, which was actually nearly Island’s sounding at times. It’s vocally pretty complex and their arrangements had me guessing at every turn. Just when I thought they’d repeat a chorus on a song, it would shift and twist into something else. Each song had a very organic innovative feel to it, and all the parts of the songs were really well thought out. Word on the street is they have a record due out August 19th, so keep an ear out.

After What Laura Says, My Pet Saddle played, then Rumspringa took the stage. Let me first start off saying that they have probably the most energetic crowd I’ve seen in a while brought by a smaller LA band. The fan’s feet were actually leaving the ground during their set, which as you all know, just doesn’t happen in LA. Rumspringa did quite well for just two guys, and had a very explosive sound. With the use of some pedals and skill, the singer (Joey Stevens), filled any gaps that might have otherwise been created by lack of other musicians. They have two more Mondays left, so go dance with the kids. Most likely it will be at The Echo, though who knows what rock star will step in and take over at any given moment.
