I have been hearing the name “The Morning Benders” around town recently, and it wasn’t until Thursday May 8th at their CD release show that I was able to really soak them in. As mentioned in our review of their sophomore release Talking Through Tin Cans, they not too long ago played with The Weather Underground and Airborne Toxic Event for their January residency. Since then they have been making good strides, including aquiring an upcoming tour with The Kooks.
I want to start off by saying that (to my surprise) playing right before The Morning Benders was a band called Dawes, which was a great treat before The Morning Benders took the stage. I have known the front man of Dawes, Taylor Goldsmith, for a little while now and at age 22 and a true professional at several instruments, I truly believe he has what it takes to go far in the music industry. Just after his set, The Morning Benders wasted no time taking the stage. They opened with “Damnit Anna”, the opening track on Talking Through Tin Cans, and from there played a good mix of songs, including a b-side song.
Something I find that attracts me to shows is when the musicians seem to really enjoy what they’re doing. The Morning Benders never fell short of having fun and had all locked in great with each other. There was dancing, good energy, and overall merriment among the four young members. Admittedly I’m not very familiar with their music, but seeing them live helped this process and expanded my knowledge of The Morning Benders. I hope to hear and see more of these guys in the near future (the next Los Angeles show is at the Wiltern with The Kooks on May 19th).
