So, a few years ago, I saw this band from Portland, OR play a small shitty bar in Eugene, OR with my friends The Parson Red Heads and now they’re getting rave reviews in Pitchfork and touring with the likes of The Hold Steady and David Vandervelde. Not bad for a band that self released their latest effort Wild Mountain Nation.
Well it appears as though that will be the last album they self-release, because the group announced today that they have signed with cream of the indie crop, Sub Pop. These guys deserve all of their sudden luck though as Wild Mountain Nation is quickly proving to be one of my favorite records of the year so far. Complicated and unexpected rhythmic changes hi-light the albums country accented gems. Imagine today’s Stephen Malkmus fronting the Wilco of 5 years ago.
They’ll be at Spaceland tomorrow night with David Vandervelde, so make sure you catch them at an intimate 21+ venue while you can, since last time they were in town was at the headache inducing El Rey.
